What’s a weir?

27 Nov

The “weir” is the flapper door on your thru wall skimmer. The weir serves three basic functions:

(1) It prevents debris from flowing back out into the pool once it’s captured, essentially functioning like a check value.

(2) It moderates the flow into the skimmer as water rises and falls so that it receives enough water to function, but not so much that it floods.

(3) It ensures that the top ½ inch of water flows into the skimmer.(that is where all the dirt starts)

Skimmer weir doors are specific to each manufacturer. These examples are for both standard and widemouth aboveground pool Waterway skimmers.  In-ground Waterway Renegade skimmers use a different part number. All skimmer weir doors, and skimmer baskets are available at http://www.waterwayparts.com

SKIMMER LIDS: Some come with screws, useful in high winds. If your skimmer lids take flight in high winds, place a heavy stone on top, or bolt on a divers weight to the underside, or just use the screws. Also dangerous are broken lids. Replace a broken skimmer lid before someone steps on it and breaks an ankle! Skimmer lids or covers are unique to each particular skimmer; find your replacement and correct color in our skimmer parts department.

Skimmer Weir and Parts
SKIMMER WEIRS: If your skimmer weir (the flapper door or gate) has broken loose, replace it with new. The weir is a very important skimmer part; it creates a small waterfall into the basket which speeds up water flow, drawing more debris in. The weir also helps to keep debris in the skimmer well when the pump shuts off. Weir doors also come in several colors.

Weir? Skimmer door?

Most pool skimmers have a flapping baffle, called a wier, that helps to keep any floating matter trapped inside it, as well as regulate the amount of water that it processes at any given time. In the well of the skimmer, you’ll find a basket, where leaves, bugs, and other debris can collect. The baskets can easily be removed from outside of the pool and its contents dumped out. Doing this regularly will ensure consistent water flow to your filter system. This Waterway skimmer door has  part number 519-3060 written on it. The part number with the foam insert is 542-3060 (white). These skimmer doors are proprietary, they only work on the manufactures models. (not interchangeable)

Vac plate

DSC03643For many pools, skimmers also provide a connection point for vacuum systems. When you want to sweep the pool, a specially designed vac hose is connected through the skimmer using a vacuum plate, and when the pump is turned on, the suction will now power your pool vac.

Why is dirt ? sand passing thru my sand filter?

8 Aug

A lateral could be cracked or broken, the multi-port valve may need servicing, or too much air may be passing through the filter, causing a channeling effect, which permits dirt to get by the filter.

There may be a broken or cracked lateral located on the manifold of your filter. You will need to inspect these laterals and replace them if necessary.
http://www.waterwayparts.com carries all Waterway multi port valves.

Why did my weir flap break?

25 Jun

The weir flap is a moving part that floats up and down with the level of the water. They are normally held in place with two small plastic tabs. Over time, or under extreme corrosive water conditions, the plastic tabs weaken and break. Several different weir doors are available at www.waterwayparts.com

Weir door? or Weird door?

18 May

The “WEIR” door for your skimmer is an important item. The weir door or “flap” floats on the surface of the pool water when the pump is operating. This action creates an added suction into the skimmer area, much like the way water picks up velocity at the top of a waterfall. This added water current pulls more surface debris into the skimmer box. The second important value to the weir door is when the pump stops running. The weir door then floats up and keeps the debris in the skimmer basket from floating back out into the pool. The bottom line is , if your weir door is gone or broken it is important to replace it. Rec Warehouse used Waterway thru wall skimmers on their above ground pools. The weir door for those skimmers is available at www.waterwayparts.com  Our part # is 542-3060

In ground pools with Waterway skimmers like the Renegade use different size weir doors.

How to replace your Waterway skimmer basket?

27 Mar

It is important to replace cracked or broken baskets. Debris will clog your pump with a damaged basket.
Disconnect the power from the pool pump. This ensures the pump is not circulating water while you are working on the pool skimmer. Remove the top cover of the skimmer, this should slide right off or pull off, depending on the style.

Place your hand in the skimmer and remove the basket by rotating clockwise until the basket unlocks. You will know it has unlocked because you will be able to pull it right out of the skimmer.
