Waterway Pump Traps

21 Mar

These Waterway pump traps look similar, but they are not interchangeable. Before you order a replacement be sure to check the size of the union nut that connects the trap to the face of the pump. The union nuts are different sizes and are labeled with different part numbers(as shown in lower pics). Trap 310-6500 will fit the Hi Flo and Hi Flo II pumps. Trap 310-5400 will fit the Iron Might, E Series, Spa Flo, TWM, and Center Discharge pumps.

TWM Sand filter pump

21 May

This is economical solution for filtering with a sand filter on an above ground pool. This center discharge pump runs within Department of Energy standards but has enough power to backwash a 22″ diameter sand filter. It will replace the pump from Model 520-1700 TWM Sand Filter. It will allow for a 8-10 hour turnover of 24,000 to 30,000 gallons, with a flow rate of approx. 50 gpm.

Above Ground Pool Pumps Horse Power Rating

21 Apr

The U.S. Department of Energy has passed new regulations around the minimum energy efficiency of above ground swimming pool pumps. Most single speed pumps over 1 horsepower won’t pass. All new and replacement pumps will need to comply with the regulations. Waterwayparts.com can suggest the possible choices for your exact filter system. These new pumps are more efficient and cost less to operate. The “new” pumps are rated differently, as example, the “old” 1.5 h.p. is now .95 THP (Total Horse Power)

If you need guidance email us a few pics of your current pump and filter and we can make a suggestion.

Center vs. Side Discharge Pumps

26 Dec

Swimming pool and spa pumps are classified, in part, according to the orientation of their discharge openings. Center discharge pumps have an opening located in the center of the wet end, while side discharge pumps have an opening located on the side of the wet end. Water is propelled through the openings and flows out through the jets in your spa. Side discharge pumps are up to 60% more efficient for pumping out high volumes of water than center discharge pumps. (SIDE DISCHARGE TOP PHOTO)

Symptoms of Spa Pump Failure

5 Aug

There are several signs of hot tub pump failure:
• Malfunctions that prevent the motor from turning, including frozen shaft or bearings, may result in a humming noise.
• A jammed impeller (inside the wet end) can do the same, as can a defective starting capacitor.
• Badly worn bearings may cause a whining noise.
• Leaks around the pump often indicate a failure of the pump seals. You will likely observe a puddle of water below the pump when these seals go bad.
You could replace these individual components (we carry the parts). But if your pump is more than a couple years old, it is generally better to replace the entire pump– motor and wet end. This is a cleaner and much easier repair, which results in a greater reliability factor in the long run.
Pumps are basically comprised of two main components: the wet end containing an impeller (which moves the water) and the electric motor (the dry end) which turns the impeller.
Get as much information from the stickers attached to the pump motor. Model number, amps, horse power, ect. We can find the proper replacement pump for you at http://www.waterwayparts.com

Replacing your pump?

12 May

The “wet end” is a term pool professionals use to describe the pump. Not the “motor”, the pump. The pump is usually plastic, and not only do they come in different horse powers, but they are made to fit different ” size” motors. 48 frame or 56 frame describe the different “mounting” points (the place where the motor bolts to the pump). Check this diagram to decide what pump you will need. As a general rule, above ground pools use 48 frame motors, 56 frame motors are usually used on spas. My pump is running, but there is no pressure. Why?

12 May

Many pool owners use this term when in fact they really mean they have lots of pressure but their flow is very low. This is caused by a dirty or clogged filter, a blocked return line, or a valve that is shut off or partially shut on the return piping.

The pump’s impeller may be clogged with debris. Check by first shutting off the pump. Remove the basket and check the impeller by putting your finger into the suction hole found in the pump strainer housing. If the seal is broken, replace it. Refer to your Owner’s Manual that is supplied with your pump (also available online under the product page for your pump), or contact your local pool dealer. http://www.waterwayparts.com

Freeze damage to waterway pump

13 Jan

Quite often if the pump is not running during a hard freeze, the trap assembly will crack. These pictures show two waterway traps that are interchangeable. Notice the ribs on the main body on (older) style. The current (newer) style doea not have the ribs, both traps are otherwise identical. What does change is the size of the union nut on the rear side. That part is not interchangeable, so make sure you measure and order the right trap for your waterway pump. www. waterwayparts.com
